Water, Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first thing I should do after a fire?

Immediately following a fire, focus on safety above all else. Call the local fire department quickly to extinguish the blaze. Once the flames are extinguished, then consider calling Restoration 1 of Flatirons. We’ll send a team as soon as possible.

How long does it take to clean up after fire damage?

Each fire damage situation is unique. As such, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to completely clean up after fire and smoke damage. We’ll give you a better timeline after a comprehensive assessment of the damage.

Can I inspect my home and belongings after a fire?

We do not recommend inspecting your home or belongings. After a severe fire, there is always the risk of structural integrity concerns and contamination in the air and on every surface within the home. Let the experts clean before you re-enter the home.

Should I try cleaning up myself?

Again, we do not recommend anyone but our restoration team entering the property. It’s important that we mitigate damage and prevent further contamination or injury.

What will happen to the items left in the home during restoration after a fire?

Any item left in your home will be thoroughly assessed, salvaged, and restored whenever possible. We do our very best to return each item to you promptly.

    What are some safety concerns?

After a fire, the primary safety concerns include smoke odors and contamination, soot, embers, structural integrity concerns, water damage, gas leaks, and electrocution. That’s why it’s crucial to let our team handle the cleanup process.

What items do I keep in my possession?

You likely won’t have time to grab any of your possessions while evacuating. That being said, Restoration 1 of Flatirons will do everything in its power to restore and return your possessions to you as quickly as we can.

How do I keep track of non-restorable items?

Our restoration team will keep a thorough list of any items in the home that we find. We’ll note their location, condition, and description for your records. You can also start this process now by keeping track of expensive items and your most prized possessions.

What about special items? Artwork, china, heirlooms, etc.

If there are any unique items, such as artwork or heirlooms, please let us know. We need a detailed description of each item and the last known whereabouts to find each one. We’ll do our best to find these items and restore them promptly.

Who is responsible for paying for the service?

Typically, the homeowner is responsible for payment. However, you will likely wish to file a claim with your insurance company for the damages.

Should I file a claim with my insurance company?

We do recommend filing a claim with the insurance company if the damage is severe. It’s important to note, however, that even letting the insurance company know of the situation without filing a claim may cause your rates to rise.

Do you communicate with my insurance adjuster?

Yes, we make ourselves available for any questions or concerns the insurance adjuster may have.

What if my house has asbestos or lead?

If your home has asbestos, lead, or any other type of contaminant, our restoration technicians are trained and equipped to handle the situation. If the problem is too severe, we’ll bring in a specialist for the best results.

What if I’d like to upgrade or remodel my house?

When restoring or reconstructing a home, we are able to provide minor upgrades or remodeling work. For more extensive renovations, however, you’ll likely want to speak with a third-party contractor with experience.

What are some common effects of water damage?

Water damage commonly leads to long-standing damage within the home, as the water seeps into the cracks and crevices of the flooring and walls. Over time, that water may cause mold to grow and spread, too.

What does the water damage restoration process involve?

The water damage restoration process requires immense care and a thorough process. We utilize very specific procedures and equipment to mitigate excess water and dry affected areas fast. At times, we may need to remove damaged portions of the building itself.

How does the water damage restoration process work?

The water damage restoration process is broken down into four key steps:

        • Step 1: We dry the affected area using large fans, wet vacuums, and pumps.
        • Step 2: We remove carpet and padding that cannot be salvaged.
        • Step 3: We restore your personal belongings.
        • Step 4: We clean and dehumidify that area to prevent mold growth and sanitize the home.

How much does it cost to fix water damage?

The cost for water damage restoration varies depending on the extent of the damage and the amount of work necessary.

What are the major causes of flood damage and water damage?

Most commonly, we find that flooding and water damage in the home or office are caused by leaking appliances, storm damage, plumbing clogs, burst pipes, moisture, and faulty plumbing.

Can water damage be hidden? If so, what are the signs?

Absolutely – it is common for water damage to go unnoticed for long periods of time. You’ll eventually notice the signs, which include a foul odor, stains on the walls and ceilings, and mold growth.

What actions should I take when I first notice water damage?

At the first sign of water damage, start drying the area. You can open up the windows, turn on overhead and standing fans, and turn on the air conditioning system. Then, call Restoration 1 of Flatirons. We’ll send a team over within an hour to mitigate damage and begin restoring your property and possessions.

How do I hire a professional restoration company?

When looking for a professional restoration company, start online. You’ll find a number of local restoration companies that are certified, licensed, and insured. It’s also smart to trust in a company that can respond quickly. That’s how Restoration 1 of Flatirons operates. We’re a trusted source of property restoration services in Lafayette, CO.

How do I file an insurance claim for water damage?

Before filing a claim for water damage, you need to first review your policy to ensure your specific situation is covered. Not all homeowners insurance policies cover all types of water damage. Then, make a detailed list of any lost or damaged possessions. Also, take photographs of any damage. When it comes time to call the insurance company, calmly explain the situation and give them a few days to send someone to your home.

How can I remove standing water easily?

If possible, start removing excess water before Restoration 1 of Flatirons arrives. First, use a mop and bucket or old towels to get rid of excess standing water. Our team will then bring in heavy-duty, advanced restoration equipment for the rest.
